Abstract

Under the light and electron microscope, 51 strains of Desmodesmus subspicatus (R. CHOD.) E. HEGEW. et A. SCHMIDT were studied. The number, thickness and length of spines was very variable and single cells were often produced. No varieties and forms are accepted. The species differs from other species with lateral spines by the higher number of lateral spines (usually 2-3 on each outer cell of coenobia) and by the cell wall ultrastructure.
